How do you get away with claiming your administration is "progressive", or "fighting for working people", or NOT the old patronage machine while avoiding advocating for city charter, city manager, elected financial officer, etc that all other major cites have is a question to be asked?
It doesn't matter if you have the "best budget brains" if none of the people with the final power act as if budgetary numbers are magic, and if you can do "one neat trick" to get what they want.
It's not about knowledge so much as wisdom... and it's completely lacking.
As long as the CTU folks believe they can jawbone $$ into being, as long as they yell loud enough, it doesn't matter how many Big Budget Brains you have.
Brandon Johnson and crew have been in denial that they're in an extremely bad place and cannot get the pony that they want.
It is no wonder that nobody who knows the numbers wants to deal with delusional leadership.
Not a pain and I get where you’re coming from. Leadership and talent matter. But structure also matters. Counting entirely on individual wisdom to save the city can take the form of our waiting for Superman syndrome. https://www.thelastward.org/p/chicago-should-stop-waiting-for-superman
Perhaps you're talking about the next administration, once Brandon Johnson is gone (he'll be gone soon enough), and I'm thinking: who wants the thankless job of developing numbers that will be ignored under Johnson?
I'm not talking about waiting for Superman -- I'm talking about waiting for non-jackasses. Perhaps that's too high a bar in Chicago.
Talent won't go to Chicago. Who wants the hassle and who wants to be associated with the train wreck? Talent will come to Chicago after the wreck happens to take credit for the rebuild. That's a resume builder.
Additionally, Chicago has ceased to be a financial center. No big banks. No big insurance companies. No big investment banks HQ there. CME/CBOE HQ there, but they are industrial finance, not consumer finance and the dealmaking happens in NYC. It is the branch office of finance.
Chicago has some of the best businesses minds in the country. Add to that the academics at the university of Chicago etc. The only reason Chicago is in financial distress is because leadership wants it that way, full stop.

Going to be a pain in the ass about this one:

I think we're talking past each other.
