"Chicago is home to the worst-funded pension plans in the nation" has been referred to for so long, I can't remember when the worst of it began. I specifically, say "referred" - since it is brought up but continually kicked down the road. What are the odds that it will be a campaign topic whenever Mendoza tosses in her hat for mayor.
If it weren't for financial mismanagement Illinois and Chicago would have no financial management. Take a look at the overtime pay that the City of Chicago has miscalculated and refused to pay Chicago police officers. What would have been a $14,000,000.00 payment, if Chicago admitted the mistake, is now nearing $200,000,000.00 because the city refused to pay the overtime it underpaid police officers after losing a lawsuit and being ordered by the court to pay.
Who’s going to support flooding the neighborhood with illegal Mexicans living in garages and attics and killing property values for all but the slumlords with subsidized mortgages who stuff them into the garages and attics? ADUs have been dead for decades for this reason. Chicago has ten thousand lots ready for redevelopment or rehabilitation on the South and West sides. The denial of this while packing in an endless number of low-income tenants into the Bungalow Belt is ridiculous hypocrisy. The ADU proposal is radical leftist social engineering and should be killed in its infancy.

Great column. The pension crisis is a manifestation of the Illinois political crisis.
